20kW Solar and Battery System Built for Costa Rica

Costa Rica offers strong solar potential, but tropical heat, high humidity, seasonal rain, airborne dust, and unstable local grid conditions can place additional demands on solar equipment. This 20kW solar system project was configured to deliver dependable power while addressing the environmental conditions of a residential or hospitality property.

The installation includes 24 solar panels rated at 580W each, two 10kW hybrid inverters, and two 10kWh lithium batteries. Together, the battery modules provide 20kWh of storage for nighttime use and grid interruption support.

The dual-inverter architecture supplies up to 20kW of configured inverter capacity while giving the project greater flexibility in system layout and load allocation. The photovoltaic array generates electricity during the day, serving active loads first and directing available surplus energy to the battery bank.

Equipment Selected for a Tropical Installation

Both hybrid inverters use IP65-rated enclosures. This level of protection helps limit exposure to dust and water entering the equipment housing when the units are installed according to the specified environmental and mounting requirements.

IP ratings do not remove the need for suitable installation practices. Shaded positioning, ventilation clearances, drainage, cable protection, surge protection, and routine inspection remain important in humid tropical regions.

The lithium battery bank stores energy produced during periods of strong sunlight. At night, the system can use this reserve to reduce grid purchases or support selected loads. During a utility interruption, the backup output can maintain essential circuits according to the inverter configuration and available battery charge.

Power Planning for Homes and Eco-Lodges

A 20kW system can serve different property types, but the final operating result depends on the load profile. A large home may prioritize air conditioning, refrigeration, pumps, lighting, and home office equipment. An eco-lodge may also need to support guest rooms, kitchens, water systems, communication equipment, and shared facilities.

For this reason, the project was not treated as a fixed collection of panels and batteries. The design considered how energy would be used throughout the day, which loads required backup, and how much stored energy should remain available after sunset.

The system can reduce reliance on an unstable grid while increasing direct use of locally generated solar electricity. It also gives the owner clearer control over when battery energy is charged and discharged.
